Being Vegan Whilst Backpacking - TOP TIPS!

May 20, 2018

Over the past couple of months, we’ve found that Bali might be one of the best places in the world for vegan travellers, but it's safe to say that we haven't been so lucky elsewhere in South East Asia. Here are some simple tips that have certainly helped stop us from getting hangry from time to time! We hope they come in handy!

The Most Important Meal Of The Day!

We love it when our hostel or hotel have free breakfast but, most of the time, we have to go hungry because we can't eat anything that they offer (perhaps apart from toast)… If you eat eggs, you’re golden but, if you’re vegan, you might be disappointed, so it's definitely worth knowing what to expect. Also for us, the day doesn’t start until we’ve had a coffee or two, but we have been given coffee with creamer in it on a number of occasions, even though we've asked for it black.

Going Out For The Day??

If you’re anything like us, you’ll be looking to do a few adventure tours whilst travelling South East Asia. However, a lot of meat and seafood can be served on the full day tours, so it’s important to tell the tour organiser about your dietary requirements beforehand! Even then, you can be limited to rice and bananas, so some snacks might be worth bringing too.

The Pick Of The Bunch!

Strangely, fruit and vegetables aren’t always as easy to get your hands on as they might be in your home country. Most mini-marts won’t actually stock them or their selection will be limited to bananas at best. Larger supermarkets in big cities will most likely have a better selection, but your best bet is to head to a market or fruit stall. That way, you can also help support those that might otherwise struggle to make a living.

Don’t be shy!

Whilst a lot of restaurants have menus outside for your to look at before you go in and sit down, some menus might be misleading or have limited details about the dishes, so it always helps to ask! What’s more, if you make them aware of your dietary requirements you might even get your own vegan dish made for you!

The same goes for fruit shakes - mmmm, our favourite! They’re almost everywhere that you look, but they’re often made with milk or yoghurt. So, what do you do? Just ask for them without of course!

Google is your BFF!

When you’re hungry and tired, there’s nothing more frustrating than not finding anything you fancy. Although vegan-friendly food can be found at restaurants, you’re not always spoilt for choice. So, searching Google Maps or TripAdvisor before you head out is a simple solution.
