With modern technology’s influence on the travel industry, it’s sometimes quite hard to believe that anyone could have even travelled before smartphones were invented! Our phones are almost always within reach nowadays, and maybe that isn’t always such a bad thing! Our smartphones and the apps on them can be a really big help, and that’s why we’ve made this list of apps that we use the most whilst travelling!
Maps.me would definitely have to be the app that we find ourselves using the most whilst travelling. The main feature is that you can download maps to use without using your mobile data. The maps are also open source, so anyone can add a particular point of interest, including hikes, viewpoints and even hot springs! Just be sure to download the appropriate map before you arrive at your destination and always use it whenever you get a taxi to ensure the driver actually knows where he’s going and you aren’t going to get scammed!
If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably watch a lot of movies, and if you’re lucky enough to have a Netflix account, you’ll probably already know that you can actually download things to watch when you don’t have wifi or a 3G connection! A couple episodes of Osark’s or Orange Is The New Black can really help on those long flights or train rides!
GPS My City
We think that the best thing to do when you arrive in a new place is to just have a little walk around, admire the architecture and observe how the way of life might be different. That’s where GPS My City comes in! They have lots of short walks in hundreds of different places around the world! Walking definitely beats getting a taxi, thus contributing to green house gas emissions and congestion on the roads! Another option is to hire a bike and for that, try using the app Spinlister.
As well as the more obvious option that is Tripadvisor, a great app to check for things to do and places to stay when travelling is Green Globe. The good thing about it is the sustainability accreditation for all of the places that are featured on it! The app interface could do with some more work, but it’s also great for those travelling for business.
Refill really could be considered one of the most important apps to have on your iPhone in 2018! With a growing number of registered establishments across the globe offering free water bottle refills, this app is for those wanting to cut down on how much single use plastics they use.
